HJF is seeking a Computational Biologist to support the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP

The candidate will be part of a team of biologists, clinicians and statisticians working on a range of questions related to vaccine research focusing on HIV and other emerging infectious diseases such as Ebola, Zika or SARS-CoV-2 in support of the goals of the Rolland Lab (https://www.hivresearch.org/our-scientists/morgane-rolland-phd). 

The incumbent will be responsible for designing and carrying out scientific analyses on the role of immunity in vaccine and cure research projects. The position involves utilizing large datasets to assess characteristics of the interaction between pathogens and the host immune response.

Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and apply mathematical and statistical methods to high throughput omics data.
  2. Design robust workflows to support analyses that integrate genetic, immunological, clinical and demographic data.
  3. Develop, evaluate and make publicly available computer code following principles of reproducible research.
  4. Interpret complex large datasets and communicate and present results clearly.
  5. Contribute to the science through independent and collaborative research including by co-authoring scientific manuscripts.
  6. Seek to continuously develop knowledge on advancements in the field through participating in scientific conferences and reading industry journals.
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong knowledge in statistics, machine learning and modeling techniques; Experience in statistic and scripting programing languages such as R, Python or Matlab; Experience with systems biology data and high dimensional data analysis; Ability to implement best practices for data analysis of large experimental data; Ability to combine different omics data and develop coherent scientific hypotheses; Experience in non-linear interactions or modeling a plus; Self-motivated and good scientific ethics; Strong analytical and problem solving skills and the desire to learn new technologies are required; Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential; The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills and be goal oriented.

Minimum Education: Master’s Degree required. Doctoral degree in Computational biology, mathematical modeling, systems biology, statistics, mathematics, machine learning, computational science bioinformatics or related discipline preferred. 

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-2 years of relevant work experience required. 

Work Environment: Laboratory environment. 

Background/Security: Must have lived in the U.S. 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
