HJF is seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP. 

The incumbent is responsible for conducting research projects involving HIV-1 antigens and candidate HIV-1 vaccines. Incumbent works with minimum supervision and investigates the bio-molecular interactions between HIV-1 particles, cells, and recombinant proteins with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies using state-of-the-art immunological and biochemical techniques including surface plasmon resonance technology and mass spectrometry. Incumbent also analyzes HIV-1 infected samples from humans or animals for HIV-1 specific antibodies.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans, conducts laboratory research in the field of HIV-1 vaccine development, and develops necessary technologies and protocols required for the work.
  2. Optimizes the Biacore system for immobilization of antibodies, proteins, and viruses on the biosensor chip and characterizes the binding of various monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to cells and HIV-1.
  3. Utilizes other methods to demonstrate the changes in HIV-1 envelope protein upon binding to cells or antibodies.
  4. Purifies proteins and peptide fragments and characterizes them by mass spectrometry and other biochemical and immunological methods.
  5. Analyzes HIV-1 infected samples from animals and humans for binding and immunogenicity.
  6. Works as a team member in assisting in studies related to immune responses to HIV-1 antigens and candidate HIV-1 vaccines.
  7. Assists in the preparation of funding applications for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, and/or extramural resources including nonprofit organizations.
  8. Should have current working knowledge in biophysical and biochemical techniques and read relevant literature pertaining to HIV.
  9. Performs data analysis, prepares graphical representation of data, prepares manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals, assists in the preparation of scientific reports for funded projects, presents research data at in-house meetings and at National and International scientific conferences.
  10. Attends all training and safety classes conducted by WRAIR and HMJF.
  11. Completes other projects and duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of complex scientific procedures and techniques; knowledge and practical experience in biophysical techniques, fundamental immunology and familiarity with infectious disease concepts, especially HIV, biochemistry and purification of proteins, knowledge of HPLC, computational skills and ability to derive mathematical expressions. Experience with Biacore and or mass spectrometry would be useful; should have excellent communication skills including the ability to write research papers and grants.  Should have the ability to work with minimum supervision, be able to design experiments and troubleshoot technical procedures.

Minimum Education: Ph.D. in related scientific discipline required. 

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-5 years of related post-doctoral research experience required. 

Supervisory Responsibilities: May provide guidance to laboratory staff.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment; requires working with human cells, HIV-1, blood, and or bodily fluids; may require working long hours including evenings and weekends.

Background/Security: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
