HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

Within the antibody effector function laboratory, we provide bioanalytic support for the System Serology Core. The incumbent will be part of a team of biologists, clinicians and statisticians working on a range of questions related to vaccine research focusing principally on HIV, but also Dengue, Ebola, MERS-coV, or other pathogens of interest to the program. 


  1. Perform antibody effector function assays independently (after training).
  2. Maintain cell lines for use in assays in the laboratory.
  3. Produce viral stocks.
  4. Assist in the performance of other investigational protocols.
  5. Place order of reagents for laboratory.
  6. Receive shipments of test articles and reagents.
  7. Comply with established laboratory safety procedures.
  8. Revise SOP’s with supervision.
  9. Maintain clear, accurate, and timely laboratory records, sample inventories, and logs.
  10. Must be able to fulfill requirements to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card, and access to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to work independently after training. Must be organized and detail oriented. Must be able to work in a team environment. Incumbent may be infrequently required to respond to emergency signals from temperature-monitoring system.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science (chemistry, biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, etc.). Incumbent will be trained in aseptic techniques for culturing cells and working with Biosafety Level 2 agents. Prior experience with aseptic techniques desirable.

Minimum Experience:  0-2 years laboratory experience. Familiarity with a laboratory environment. Basic computer experience using word processing and spreadsheets (Windows Office) required.

Physical Capabilities: Job performance requires movement around a laboratory and periods of sitting at a BSC. Fine motor coordination to operate micropipettes is required. Lifting up to 50 pounds will occasionally be required in the disposal of trash or shifting  laboratory equipment.

Work Environment: The incumbent will handle some hazardous chemicals and be trained to practice safe handling of hazardous chemicals. The incumbent will handle and prepare solutions of penicillin, streptomycin, and neomycin.
