HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I to support the MHRP at the Viral Sequencing Core (VSC) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP and WRAIR. 

The incumbent is responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff. Solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a clinical or laboratory environment.


  1. Performs complex and difficult laboratory research projects including RNA and DNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and single genome amplification PCR.
  2. Collection and organization of data, and maintaining databases. Makes detailed observations on experiments.
  3. Assists in the preparation of reports, publications, and presentations.
  4. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  5. Applies quality control measures as outlined/required by the protocol. Provides basic data analysis.
  6. Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.  
  7. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks. May provide basic instruction to other lab staff.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of laboratory and data analysis techniques; ability to follow general instructions; good communication with VSC team and analytical skills. Experience with PCR and Molecular Biology.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree

Minimum Experience: 0-3 years in a laboratory environment. 

Physical Capabilities:  Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment.

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
