HJF is seeking a Research Assistant/Student to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.  

The incumbent is responsible for research and/or development in collaboration with others for projects. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff.


  1. Performs laboratory research projects and experiments, including collection and organization of data. Makes detailed observations about experiments.
  2. Assists in the synthesis of hapten-protein conjugates.
  3. Characterizes hapten-protein conjugates using mass spectrometry, nanodifferential fluorimetry, and capillary electrophoresis.
  4. Conducts ELISA and competition ELISA on mouse serum.
  5. Assists Animal Technician on collection of blood and running drug challenge assays.
  6. Assists the Program Manager in the preparation of technical reports, summaries, and protocols.
  7. Maintains clear and accurate laboratory records, inventories and logbooks.
  8. Performs data entry for research projects and maintains databases.
  9. Graphs and calculates data.
  10. Completes all required training and works in a safe manner following all safety regulations.
  11. Maintains supplies in the laboratory and keeps the laboratory area clean.
  12. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques; ability to follow detailed instructions; good communication and analytical skills.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: In the process of getting a Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline. Preferably with background in Biochemistry.

Minimum Experience: 0 to 2 years of laboratory experience as a summer intern.

Physical Capabilities: Long periods of standing and sitting; handling various chemicals.

Work Environment: Laboratory environment.

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background.
