HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Scientist to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, energetic and motivated individual to join our research effort investigating the functional consequences of human genetic, transcriptome, epigenetic and microbiome variation on HIV-1 and emerging diseases pathogenesis. The candidate will be responsible for designing, leading, and carrying out integrative analyses of these ‘omics’ data, to elucidate cellular pathways and networks that are associated with immune responses to infectious diseases.


  1. The candidate will implement analysis workflows to facilitate omics analysis, and pursue bioinformatics analyses in collaborations within our research group and other groups/clinicians within MHRP. 
  2. Workflows will include quality control, sequence alignment and annotation, gene expression determination, statistical testing, visualization and pathway analysis.
  3. Generate, analyze, and manage large and computationally complex datasets.
  4. Perform project-specific laboratory-based research. 
  5. Author scientific publications based on both research findings and data analysis results derived from employing standard and novel analysis methodologies. 
  6. Prepare technical reports, summaries, and SOPs.
  7. Train and manage junior staff.        
  8. Present data and issues/problems at weekly section meetings. 
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Extensive experience with next generation sequencing computational and analytical tools. The ability to construct high-throughput analysis pipelines for omics data, and to integrate with in-house databases.  Must be highly motivated to solve biological problems, and have experience analyzing large-scale and high-throughput genomics data (e.g., experience with one or more of: exome sequencing, ChIP-Seq, methyl-Seq or RNA-Seq data). The candidate should have good knowledge of at least one scripting language for handling large-scale data (e.g., Python, Perl), and one programming language for implementing computational models and algorithms (R, Matlab, Python, C/C++). Must be an enthusiastic, self-directed, and communicative team player; be able to troubleshoot technical procedures; and possess excellent writing and communication skills. Must be able to work independently as indicated by an ability to publish papers.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements:  Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, computational biology or a related scientific discipline. A highly motivated Master’s degree candidate with suitable experience might be considered.

Minimum Experience:  2-4 years of related research experience in analyzing and interpreting human datasets.

Physical Capabilities:  Prolonged periods of both standing and sitting; intricate work with hands in laboratory.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:  Provide training and guidance to junior staff.

Work Environment: May require working evenings and weekends.

Other:  Work is performed entirely in support of a Federal Sponsored Cooperative Agreement and therefore is dependent solely on the ability of the Federal Government to fund the agreement. Position will terminate in the absence or withdrawal of Federal funds.

Background: Must have lived in the US 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to pass a NACI background. This position is only open to US citizens and permanent residents.
